Antic in a Drain combines circus and bouffon to develop extreme characters and tell stories from the fringes, igniting dialogue and change within communities around ignored or taboo social issues. Antic in a Drain has developed three shows available for booking: The Greatest Monkey Show On Earth, a primate circus extravaganza that takes a satirical bite out of animal/human agency, premiered in 2014 after an Artist Residency at the San Francisco Circus Center, then toured to the Edmonton and Vancouver Fringe Festivals in Canada that same year, receiving a four-star review from Global News and the inaugural Artistic Risk Award in Vancouver. In 2016 Antic in a Drain was Artist-in-Residence at Kinetic Arts Center, where the second version of the Greatest Monkey Show was workshopped and performed. It was nominated for two 2016 Theatre Bay Area Awards for Outstanding Makeup and Costume Design and won for Costuming. Bucko: Whaleman!, a high seas whaling voyage that launches a satirical harpoon into the heart of human greed and natural resource consumption, premiered on Hyde Street Pier at San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park in 2017. Tempting Fate, a satirical sideshow entertainment reflecting the house of mirrors called climate change, premiered at Little Boxes Theater in 2019. The show was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle by Lily Janiak and was nominated for seven Theatre Bay Area Awards, including Outstanding Solo Production, Outstanding Direction of a Specialty Production, Outstanding Creative Specialties for Mask AND Puppet Design, Outstanding Costume Design, and Outstanding Sound Design. The show won for Outstanding Creative Specialties for Mask Design.

  • Gualala Arts
    Gualala Arts
Arts Council/Alliance;  Gallery/Museum;  Nonprofit;  Special Events
Since 1961, Gualala Arts has served Sonoma and Mendocino County coastal residents and visitors with year-round programs of art, music, theater and education. With a budget around $700,000, Gualala Arts operates with 14 members on the board of directors, an executive director, office, operations and events managers,  public relations coordinator, Dolphin Gallery manager, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers. Gualala was vastly different in the early 1950s. The Gualala Hotel was the only place to stay and eat in this little lumber town. There were no motels, gas stations, or supermarkets. There were four sawmills, a general store, four bars and about 300 people. There were no art galleries. After the sawmills closed in the 1960s, people drawn by the natural beauty of the area began to settle here, many of them creative, imaginative and artistic. They opened art galleries and staged musicals, plays and other artistic events. Gualala, and these people, attracted other creative and artistic people. Gualala became recognized as a center for individuals who enjoy many forms of the arts. In 1961, Gualala Arts was formed as a non-profit organization. Since then, it has become a vibrant and active arts association supporting a variety of programs for both residents and visitors to the area. Gualala Arts regularly holds art exhibits and gallery shows both at the Dolphin Gallery and at the Gualala Arts Center. On the third weekend in August each year, we present one of the most prestigious art exhibitions in northern California – the Art in the Redwoods Festival. We give scholarships to local high school seniors each year, and provide concerts, plays, and art classes within the public schools, using our abilities to fill in where public school funding is limited.
  • Kelley House Museum
    Kelley House Museum
    Gallery/Museum;  History/Heritage;  Nonprofit
In 1969, retired accountant Beth Stebbins, and retired librarian Dorothy Bear, both from Palm Springs, settled in Mendocino. Bear was a fine photographer and soon became interested in the architecture and old buildings around town. Both women were surprised to discover that no one had taken an interest in the town’s rich and unique history. So they took on the job to begin historical research. In 1973 they established the Mendocino Historical Research, Inc. Soon after official incorporation, they began to publish books and collect photographs of the town, residents and a wide variety of cultural artifacts. The acquisition of the Kelley House for an organizational headquarters began in earnest a year later. Through community engagement, energetic fundraising (and some general arm twisting), the restoration of the 114 year old building was eventually completed. Today the Kelley House Museum continues to support the community with its dedication to collecting, preserving and sharing the rich history of the Mendocino coast. The Kelley House Museum has been a non-profit organization since its inception. Its core mission remains that of preserving local history while standing as a guardian of the irreplaceable cultural environment and architecture of this unique place. The Kelley House Museum and Historical Research Facility are supported entirely by donations, and do not receive government funding of any sort.

Ukiah Players Theatre is a professionally managed nonprofit community organization in residence at the Ukiah Playhouse. We are committed to providing our rural audiences with a wide range of theatre experiences including the classics and contemporary plays as well as original theatre pieces created for, by, and about our community. Ukiah Players Theatre was founded in 1977 by an eclectic group of theatre artists who, for several years, produced plays, musicals and readings in rented halls in and around Ukiah. A coalition of community leaders joined forces in 1980 to begin plans to build the Ukiah Playhouse with donations of labor and materials. After signing a $1/year lease with the City of Ukiah for the land, Phase I of the Playhouse opened in 1982. A sizable grant from the Irvine Foundation completed Phase II in 1988, adding shop space, costume storage, dressing rooms and a box office to the 138-seat auditorium facility. Over the years the Playhouse has been home to the Ukiah Children’s Theatre, the School of Performing Arts and Cultural Education, Mendocino Ballet, public education programs, business and training seminars, film series, weddings and has even served as a polling place. Since its inception in 1977, Ukiah Players Theatre has presented well over 100 main stage plays and musical productions. Over the years UPT has also developed several innovative programs, including the biennial New American Comedy Festival and a number of grant-funded community based theatre projects.
