MENDOCINO COUNTY 2012 POETRY OUT LOUD FINALS
At 3:45pm, on Tuesday, Feb 7th at the Arena Theater in Point Arena (214 Main Street, downtown Point Arena), Suzanne Kritz from Pacific Community Charter High School, Elijah Ravitz-Campbell and Adam Clapp from Mendocino Community High School and Jaida Scaife from Mendocino High School competed for the chance to become the Mendocino County representative at the 2012 State Finals of the Poetry Out Loud Recitation Competition in Sacramento. The event was judged by four California poets/performers: Cheri Ause William Ray, Martin Hickel, and Leslie Lindborg. Elijah Ravitz-Cambell (reciting "They Are Hostile Nations" by Margaret Atwood and" Nude Descending a Staircase" by X. J. Kennedy) will won the Mendocino County title, and Susanna Kritz was the runner up (reciting "Fire & Ice" by Robert Frost and "Horse & Rider" by Ivy Schex).
Elijah Ravitz-Campbell will advance to the State Finals in Sacramento on March 25 & 26. A collaborative effort of the National Endowment For the Arts, the California Arts Council, the California Poets In the Schools and Arts Council of Mendocino County, Poetry Out Loud encourages high school students to memorize and perform great poems. In 2011 more than 300,000 students across the nation participated in the Poetry Out Loud program.

Immediately following the Mendocino County POL Finals, high school poets from Point Arena, Fort Bragg, and Mendocino slamed their original poetry at the 12th annual MCOE/CPITS Coast High School Poetry Slam. The event was be judged by four California poets/performers: Cheri Ause William Ray, Martin Hickel, and Leslie Lindborg, with audience response influencing their decision. Winner of the Coast Slam 2012 was Raina Deerwater, with Niko Gomez second, and Elijah Ravitz-Campbell and Rowan Rusert tied for third. The slam was sponsored by the Mendocino County Office of Education and California Poets in the Schools with the generous support of the Arena Theater.
