Antic in a Drain combines circus and bouffon to develop extreme characters and tell stories from the fringes, igniting dialogue and change within communities around ignored or taboo social issues. Antic in a Drain has developed three shows available for booking: The Greatest Monkey Show On Earth, a primate circus extravaganza that takes a satirical bite out of animal/human agency, premiered in 2014 after an Artist Residency at the San Francisco Circus Center, then toured to the Edmonton and Vancouver Fringe Festivals in Canada that same year, receiving a four-star review from Global News and the inaugural Artistic Risk Award in Vancouver. In 2016 Antic in a Drain was Artist-in-Residence at Kinetic Arts Center, where the second version of the Greatest Monkey Show was workshopped and performed. It was nominated for two 2016 Theatre Bay Area Awards for Outstanding Makeup and Costume Design and won for Costuming. Bucko: Whaleman!, a high seas whaling voyage that launches a satirical harpoon into the heart of human greed and natural resource consumption, premiered on Hyde Street Pier at San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park in 2017. Tempting Fate, a satirical sideshow entertainment reflecting the house of mirrors called climate change, premiered at Little Boxes Theater in 2019. The show was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle by Lily Janiak and was nominated for seven Theatre Bay Area Awards, including Outstanding Solo Production, Outstanding Direction of a Specialty Production, Outstanding Creative Specialties for Mask AND Puppet Design, Outstanding Costume Design, and Outstanding Sound Design. The show won for Outstanding Creative Specialties for Mask Design.

School of Performing Arts & Cultural Education (SPACE) is an acclaimed afterschool performing arts program serving youth ages infant through 18. SPACE, located near downtown Ukiah at 508 West Perkins, offers an innovative year-round program that has become a vital beacon for hundreds of children and their families. Our program emphasizes diversity, youth leadership, cross-cultual arts, social issues, and exemplary training in the arts. The curriculum may address issues of social, environmental and cultural awareness and activism such as distribution of resources, unlearning racism, gender stereotyping and/or sexual orientation. SPACE’s mission is to empower our youth to discover and trust in their innate ability to be creative, responsible and compassionate individuals through effective training in dance, theater, music and cultural education. After collaborating for ten years directing Performing Arts Summer Camp and other projects, Laurel Near & Paulette Arnold founded Near & Arnold’s School of Performing Arts & Cultural Education in 1995. Both women have been teaching young people since 1981. All our staff are experienced performing arts educators or practicing artists. They are selected for their special ability to relate to young people’s training, social and developmental needs. We are also proud of our “Teacher Training & Youth Leadership Program” which nurtures young people who have the skills and interest to become teachers. A priority of SPACE is the Scholarship Program, which provides access for all interested youth. The community, through fundraising events, donations, and grants, supports the program. Forty percent of families receive some financial assistance for tuition. SPACE functions as a safe space for youth to explore, express and reshape daily challenges through physical, vocal, and emotional creative growth. SPACE has been awarded and recognized by statewide foundations and is a living example of the power of art to affect individuals and change the consciousness and landscape of Mendocino County.

    Ukiah Players Theatre
    Nonprofit;  Theatre
Ukiah Players Theatre is a professionally managed nonprofit community organization in residence at the Ukiah Playhouse. We are committed to providing our rural audiences with a wide range of theatre experiences including the classics and contemporary plays as well as original theatre pieces created for, by, and about our community. Ukiah Players Theatre was founded in 1977 by an eclectic group of theatre artists who, for several years, produced plays, musicals and readings in rented halls in and around Ukiah. A coalition of community leaders joined forces in 1980 to begin plans to build the Ukiah Playhouse with donations of labor and materials. After signing a $1/year lease with the City of Ukiah for the land, Phase I of the Playhouse opened in 1982. A sizable grant from the Irvine Foundation completed Phase II in 1988, adding shop space, costume storage, dressing rooms and a box office to the 138-seat auditorium facility. Over the years the Playhouse has been home to the Ukiah Children’s Theatre, the School of Performing Arts and Cultural Education, Mendocino Ballet, public education programs, business and training seminars, film series, weddings and has even served as a polling place. Since its inception in 1977, Ukiah Players Theatre has presented well over 100 main stage plays and musical productions. Over the years UPT has also developed several innovative programs, including the biennial New American Comedy Festival and a number of grant-funded community based theatre projects. The Ukiah Playhouse serves as a training ground for performers, directors, playwrights and technicians, and houses a theatre which nurtures an intellectual and spiritual vitality within the community.

In 1988, it hired its first Artistic Director, Linda Palmer, a professional actor/dancer/director who is best remembered for her performance (as the ex-wife) in Bob Fosse’s 1979 film All That Jazz. Subsequent artistic directors have included screenwriter/director Lanny Cotler (films: The Earthling, 1981, as writer, and Heartwood, 1996, as writer and director) and John LeFan, long a mainstay with San Francisco’s Artaud Theatre Group.
