Laurie DeVault is a California native with family ties to Mendocino. She has been with Highlight Gallery since 2015, where dozens of her colorful abstracts have found homes with clients from near and far.

DeVault grew up in a family where creativity was valued and where her own artistic interests were nurtured. She earned her art degree and teaching credential at Cal Poly Humboldt, and years later a master’s in education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. After retiring from a long and satisfying career as an educator, DeVault picked up her paint brush once again…. and has never stopped.

Her approach to painting is an unplanned and spontaneous exploration of color, form, texture, and mark making. Although her painting style varies, one can usually spot a DeVault work from its richly colorful palette, playful geometry, and enchanting musicality, often reminiscent of the works of Paul Klee, a favorite artist since childhood.

DeVault’s whimsical art can be found in galleries and private collections around the United States and beyond. She has enjoyed representation by galleries from coast to coast, including Provincetown, Santa Fe, and her hometown of Sierra Madre. One can find her paintings gracing women’s clothing designed by Dolcezza of Montreal and UbU of Pennsylvania. Her painting “Voyage” earned the coveted cover for the 2021 edition of ArtFolio, a curated collection of artists from around the world. She has also received top honors from the BoldBrush painting hosted by Fine Art Studio Online (FASO). Her “Houses on a Hill” was chosen for a music album cover and her “Ode to Joy,” for a concert poster.
