Spend a day and a half working with Jacob wool. Robin will discuss how to bring together all the variables that you have when starting with a Jacob fleece from choosing a fleece, mixing or sorting wool, fiber prep, yarn design, and fabric design. She will demonstrate skirting and sorting Jacob and BFL (Bluefaced Leicester) x Jacob fleeces while explaining micron measurements, problem fleeces and how to choose a fleece to buy. You will learn to wash wool and how to choose the best processing method for a spotted fleece. You will card (and/or flick or comb) and spin a variety of color combinations from your pre-washed fleece and learn to determine the outcome when you separate or blend the natural colors. Robin will show examples of final projects, both knitted and woven and will discuss what to consider when spinning yarn for weaving.

Materials provided:

8 oz washed Jacob wool
4 oz greasy fleece
Students need to bring:

Bucket or bowl for washing fleece
Lingerie bag (optional)
2 towels for drying fleece
Drum carder and/or hand carders and/or flicker and/or combs
Spinning wheel or spindle
Oil, bobbins
This workshop will cover all the ins and outs of working with a Jacob fleece. You will wash wool and set it out to dry; Robin will discuss micron measurements and compare Jacob to other breeds of sheep; You will skirt fleeces (2 Jacob and 1 Bluefaced Leicester); Discuss problems with fleeces, what to look for, how to purchase a sound fleece; Discuss quality of locks on different parts of the sheep (britch wool, etc).

You will then card and spin the wool. At first you will spin the separate colors: white, gray, and black. After spinning samples of solid colors, you will explore random colors, mixed colors and 2-ply different colors.

Robin will talk about using the yarn in projects; show samples; discuss combining yarns; and discuss what makes a good weaving yarn.
