Resistance/Persistance: The Life of a Sculptor
Artists’ Co-op of Mendocino will present Pat Scott, sculptor, as the November Artist of the Month, from November 7 to Dec. 3.
Her show, titled Resistance/Persistence, reflects her love of resistant and challenging materials, requiring persistence and patience from the first blocking out to the final sanding and finishing. Pat has loved working in sculpture since childhood – collecting and assembling found objects or searching for native clays with her brother when West Los Angeles was mostly lima bean fields and irrigation ditches. She began wood carving at Girl Scout camp and continued to explore and study sculpture throughout her life, working in many media including clay, cement, bronze, wood and stone. One summer at the Oakland College of Arts and Crafts she studied stone carving and after moving to Mendocino in 1972, continued pursuing that medium with local teachers including Ruth Cravath, Flory Chowe, and John Fisher. Although her favorite medium over the years is marble, she recently has worked in metals using plasma cutters. No matter the medium, she is intrigued with the creative journey which she experiences as the interaction between sculptural ideas, the use of appropriate tools and the intrinsic attributes and limitations of the sculptural material. In the November show, there will be a selection of marble and alabaster works, and a variety of wall sculptures of wood, metal, Connamara marble, slate, bronze and computer parts.
She will give the 2nd Saturday Artist Talk on November 11, 5:30 P.M. The gallery is located at the corner of Kasten and Albion Streets in Mendocino and is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
