Position Summary

The Deputy Director reports to and partners closely with the Executive Director (ED) to ensure the smooth operation of SPACE, its programs and facilities, and its fundraising and community relations efforts. While the expectations of the Deputy Director are broad, the day-to-day focus of the Deputy Director is on organizational management and operations, support to productions and fundraising events, and facilities management and rentals.

A new position at SPACE as of 2021, the Deputy Director is the most senior staff position in the organization after the Executive Director. The individual in this role is expected to have or gain an understanding of the field of arts and youth education and to stay current with opportunities and issues relating to the mission of SPACE and its core programs and offerings.

Key Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience plus a minimum of 3 years of nonprofit operations experience. Must-haves include attention to detail demonstrating strong orientation toward systems and processes, along with excellent written, verbal, and listening communications skills, including exceptional customer service skills serving a wide variety of stakeholders: teachers, students, parents, renters, board members, etc. The successful candidate is someone who is self-motivated, able to work independently and with good humor under pressure, who also has a willingness to learn, be flexible, and work in a team environment. Project management skills are key to success, including the ability to manage self and others to deadlines and budget. Candidates will have a strong general proficiency as a technology user, including office software such as Microsoft Office and Quickbooks, databases, and mobile app-based platforms. Finally, an important quality is flexibility in schedule, including the ability to work some evenings/weekends.
