Mendocino Art Center's Matilija Poppy Project

Mendocino Art Center's Matilija Poppy Project

Presented by Mendocino Art Center at Mendocino Art Center

Two of the leading lights in American metalsmithing, Tom and Patsy are teaching concurrent jewelry workshops at MAC, January 11-15, before collaborating in the Mendocino Art Center’s jewelry studio on a one-of-a-kind Matilija poppy brooch. The public is invited to hear Tom and Patsy present plans for the co-designed, 18-karat gold brooch which will be auctioned to benefit the Art Center. Tom will primarily work on the construction, while Patsy will focus on enameling and pliqué-a-jour.

Tom specializes in work with custom cut precious stones and gold carvings, each piece with a unique design inspired by organic natural forms and featuring geometric balance. Each piece he designs is created using classical metalworking techniques of chasing, carving and saw piercing.

Patsy believes a piece of jewelry is a timeless treasure. Driven from the passion of the masters, and inspired by the beauty she sees around her, she creates jewels that are always unique. She enjoys working with people to discover what they are passionate about and incorporate their beauty into a wearable work of art.
