UKIAHAIKU FESTIVAL

The 22nd Annual ukiaHaiku Festival will return to the Ukiah Civic Center on Sunday, April 28 from 2-4 p.m. As we return to a traditional contest format, we invite the community to celebrate the wonder and capacity of haiku through Ukiah’s palindrome with readings and live music. Prizes will be awarded for 10 categories, from Kindergarten through 12th grades and adults, including the International Jane Reichhold Award. Winners are invited to attend the ukiaHaiku Festival to read their haiku.

In recognition that the Pomo people are the original inhabitants of this area and that the word Ukiah itself is from the Pomo languages, we made an open call to our Pomo neighbors to share haiku in Pomo languages or that express a Pomo perspective. Four poems have been selected to be read at the festival.

There will also be two returning performances — shakuhachi music by Karl Young and classic feel-good ukulele covers by the Uketones. This year’s festival was made possible in part by a grant for youth outreach from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities; and supported by North Coast Opportunities.

The ukiaHaiku Festival is also sponsored in part by the Ukiah Branch of the Mendocino Library, the Grace Hudson Museum, Mendocino Book Company, City of Ukiah (Ukiah Civic Center), Wave Books, Tsadik, Schat’s Bakery, and the Arts Council of Mendocino County.
