The Willits Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the upcoming installment of its esteemed “ART TALKS” lecture series, focusing on Neoclassicism and the groundbreaking contributions of three influential artists: Ingres, Canova, and Jacques-Louis David. Art Historian and lecturer Gary Martin will lead the discussion, accompanied by projected art images, providing attendees with an enlightening exploration into how these artists revolutionized the perception of the world through their profound artistic endeavors.

Neoclassicism, a significant artistic movement that emerged in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, sought inspiration from the classical ideals of ancient Greece and Rome. Rejecting the frivolity of previous styles such as Rococo and Baroque, Neoclassical artists emphasized clarity, order, and rationality in their works, aiming to evoke the timeless beauty and noble virtues of classical antiquity.

Gary Martin will delve into the aesthetic principles and thematic concerns that defined the Neoclassical movement. Through insightful commentary and visually captivating images, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the artistic techniques and ideological underpinnings employed by Ingres, Canova, and Jacques-Louis David, three titans of Neoclassicism whose masterpieces continue to captivate audiences worldwide.

This compelling presentation promises to be an engaging and enlightening experience for art enthusiasts and scholars alike. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the enduring legacy of Neoclassicism and its profound impact on the way we perceive and interpret the world around us.
