Many years ago Dan Olson and Lynne Zickerman bought land filled with redwoods out in Comptche. They built a home which includes a lower floor just for art studios and a second floor for forest views. Lynne remarks how these ancient trees have become familiar companions; she feels comfort in the forest and as she walks in her yard she senses them as families of trees living in a community of living things, their quiet presence surrounding her. Looking out every window upstairs, there they are again, their “waist lines” of textured bark and green tiled branches filling each window frame. This inspired the artist to make a series she calls, “Out My Window”.

Lynne writes, “I recently learned about Forest Bathing, a Japanese practice called Shinrin Yoku.

The goal is to immerse oneself in natural beauty to achieve greater calmness and health.  This describes how I feel in any redwood forest, and it is the feeling I want to share through my paintings.  I have such gratitude for the trees, gifts from Nature, and for the abundant provisions from the Earth”.

For the month of June look out the window with Lynne Zickerman at the Redwood Forest that surrounds her home. Her interpretations tend towards a joyful simplification of shape and delightful interplay of colors and textures.

Lynne Zickerman is inspired by the quiet presence of the redwoods which live and grow in harmony with the environment. Like Shinrin Yoku, the Japanese practice of “forest bathing,” her paintings invite the viewer to experience the calm and beauty of the forest.
