Darrell Carpenter's Paintings and Robert Ross's Paper Cuts and Collages at Willits Center for the Arts

Presented by Willits Center for the Arts at Willits Center for the Arts

I’m sure visitors to the Willits Center for the Arts will appreciate the opportunity to view such unique and diverse works of art. The combination of Carpenter’s printmaking and Ross’s paper-cutting and collage techniques will offer a multi-dimensional look at the power of visual art. It’s a great opportunity for both artists to showcase their talent and for art enthusiasts to appreciate their work. This exciting show will open on June 3rd at 6 pm and closes June 26.

Robert Ross studied at Reed College, the Art Students League of New York, and the Cooper Union, NY.  He’s lived on California’s north coast since 1965, working in oils, acrylics and watercolor, collage, drawing, printmaking, and freehand papercut.

He’s taught at the College of the Redwoods, the Mendocino Art Center, the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts, and the California State Summer School for the Arts.  He says: I’ve been deeply influenced by jazz and classical music, which is probably the source of my commitment to design, structure, and rhythm — and to improvisation — rather than to any single medium or style.

The artist, Darrell Carpenter, was born in 1960 in Ukiah and resided there until the age of twelve when his family purchased a home in Redwood Valley. From a young age, Carpenter demonstrated an affinity for creating various items such as kites, puppets, and stuffed animals. His mother expressed that she never had to worry about him as he could always be found in a corner, engrossed in drawing and coloring.

Carpenter is a third-generation resident of Redwood Valley and graduated with honors from Chico State University in 1984, specializing in printmaking. He holds a BA and focuses on printmaking and painting as a medium for his artistic expression. In order to have a dedicated workspace, Carpenter created a studio on his property, opting out of using his kitchen table, which was becoming increasingly difficult to keep tidy.

Carpenter’s style is distinct and reflective of his personal experiences and environment. His art is a testament to his dedication and passion for his craft, and his work continues to inspire and captivate audiences.
