Bast Fiber Textiles of Japan

Bast Fiber Textiles of Japan

Presented by Pacific Textile Arts at Pacific Textile Arts

Before silk and cotton were introduced to Japan, people used the fibers of the native plants or trees, such a hemp, ramie, banana, kudzu and linden tree.

Even today, this tradition of hand processing the plant bast fiber to make threads/cloths remain thanks to “Kimono Culture.”  This exhibit will focus on plant material rather than refined designing or weaving/dyeing techniques on finished items.

We will display farmer’s garments as well as delicate costumes, and many clothes made with various bast fibers.  Each material in the different stages of process will be included.

Opening June 2, 5-7:00 PM, Pacific Textile Arts.
