Concert Spotlight: Margaret Bonds ⭐️
The Ballad of the Brown King
Margaret Bonds (1913-1972) was an African-American composer born in Chicago. A lifelong advocate of social and racial justice, she became one of the first Black female composers to gain recognition in the U.S. She studied piano and composition at Northwestern where she encountered a great deal of prejudice.
She is best known for her art songs and spiritual arrangements, and collaborations with her longtime friend, Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes. Their most performed project is a Christmas Cantata titled The Ballad of the Brown King, combining classical, jazz, calypso, and gospel styles.
Hear the USO perform The Ballad of the Brown King Dec. 3 & 4, featuring The Mendocino College Choirs directed by Janice Hawthorne Timm, and our four guest vocalists!
