Annual collaboration between Artists’ Co-op of Mendocino and the Writers of the Mendocino Coast involving 18 randomly and anonymously paired artists and writers responding to each other’s works. Exhibition in the Gallery and online.
The Artists’ Co-op of Mendocino collaborated for the eleventh year with Writers of the Mendocino Coast for their annual event Exphrasis, a Greek word meaning “art inspiring other art.”
This is how it worked: In Spring, 18 writers and 18 artists were randomly and anonymously paired. During Summer, for half of the pairs, a writer responded to an artwork provided by the artist (unsigned and untitled). In the other half of the pairs, an artist responded to a writing submitted with no title nor author’s name.
The identities of the participants have now been revealed with this month’s gallery exhibit hosted by the Artists’ Co-op, and where the framed writings are installed side-by-side with the artworks. An online exhibition is also posted on the Co-op’s website.
