Clarence Darrow: A One Man Play

Clarence Darrow: A One Man Play

Presented by Ukiah Players Theatre and Willits Community Theatre at Willits Community Theatre

Returning to the stage, Timothy Fischer (UPT’s own Henry Higgins and Cyrano de Bergerac) will portray Clarence Darrow, the eminent American lawyer and leading member of the American Civil Liberties Union. Fischer brings his dynamism and oratory flair to this challenging role, and this one-man tour de force will have you contemplating the notions of fairness and justice—which are just as pressing today as they were in Darrow’s time.

“Clarence Darrow: A One Man Play” written by Daniel W. Rintels will be showcased at Willits Community Theatre September 2-4 and Ukiah Players Theatre September 8-11.

Directed by Jim Williams, and starring Tim Fischer in the single dramatic role, the production presents the life and actions of the famed criminal defense attorney through scenes at his home, his office and the courtroom.

Darrow gained fame fin the early 20th century for his fight to defend personal liberty, his opposition to the death penalty, and his repeated legal efforts for the recognition that all persons are created equal.

Director Williams says the play’s dramatization highlights the timelessness of Darrow’s perspectives. “Darrow’s vision of a new more just society, one grounded in reason, tempered by mercy, and guided by the ‘divine spark’ inherent in all people, fueled his passionate defense of the marginalized, hated and despised,” says Williams.

The play’s historical accuracy stems from Rintels’ adapation of Irving Stone’s landmark 1941 biography, Clarence Darrow for the Defense. Williams says of the show, “We have the privilege of hearing from the man himself as he shares with us his perspectives on his times and his place in them.”

Williams previously directed the WCT hit play “Grace And Glorie”, along with “Revival at Possum Kingdom Community Church” and “Off the Map”. Fischer teaches drama at Willits High School and most recently co-directed WCT’s Gateway To The Stage Summer Camp.

Performances at WCT are Friday September 2 and Saturday September 3 at 7:30pm, and a Sunday matinee at 2pm.

UPT will showcase the play September 8 through 11. Tickets are $15 for the WCT show and available online at: www.wctperformingartscenter.org.
