WCA September show presents Fabric: what artists can do with it!

Presented by Willits Center for the Arts at Willits Center for the Arts

Made in Mendocino, a show of what artists can do with fabrics. There will be quilts, installation art, mobiles, and handmade clothes along with a selection of hand-painted clothes by Pearl Marill.

Artists included are from Willits and Ukiah. Laura Fogg, Ursula Partch, Holly Brackman, Ann Horton, Nan Trickler, Charlotte Teftt, Betty Lacy, Gretchen Moore, and 8 other artists.

The show concentrates on the many ways fabric is used for art. Betty Lacy has created mobiles of fabric that float with the slightest wind. Laura Fogg presents her complex political statements in a mandala with the United Nations statement of women worldwide, embroidered into it. Ursula Partch will show an installation piece called Redwoods Saved, made of woven fibers of cotton and wool. The piece stands 8’x6’ and will amaze viewers.

In the jewelry case we’ll present Bahia Beads by Mona Bourell: Hand Crocheted Beaded Jewelry, a Vintage Technique Revived.

The technique of crocheting bead ropes is an elegant craft that was very popular in the Victorian era and through the early 20th century. In the Roaring 20s, flappers wore long swinging necklaces, especially when they danced the Charleston. Mona learned this time-consuming technique from her aunt in the 1960s, when the method was enjoyed a revival.

The beads are first strung onto strong, fine thread and then brought up one at a time and crocheted in a spiral to make a long rope necklace or a roll-on bracelet. Due to the spiral crochet stitch, there is a slight give that enables a bracelet to roll over the hand onto the wrist. The result is extremely comfortable with no cumbersome class. Creativity, planning and accuracy are required to achieve the desired effect, especially if there are multicolored patterns or textures. In addition to glass seed beads, Mona uses larger glass beads of all sizes, shapes and colors, including freshwater pearls, natural stone, semi-precious stone, wood, bone, amber, and shell… Anything with a hole in it!
