Debra Lennox:

Debra Lennox: "No One Owns the Moon"

at Artists’ Co-op Of Mendocino

Stepping away from the newsroom chatter that encourages polarization and discord, Debra Lennox seeks the universals that can connect us, rather than divide us, and finds an example in our relationship with the moon.

Looking closely at nature, her series about the moon and its presence leads to conversations about our own connection to the magic we feel in the moonlight. Our Western tradition sees a “Man in the Moon”. In Japan, they see a rabbit. Originally the titles were based on the Farmers’ Almanac designations for each month’s moon which used the local tribes’ names for the seasonal changes. Each tribe, including the ancient Anglo-Saxons, had their own way of connecting with the passage of time through the observation of the cycles of the moon. The artist writes: “I have celebrated the different Moons across time whether they are this month’s Strawberry moon in June or the recent Super Blood Flower Moon which included an eclipse. We can connect across the cultures and tell our moon stories to each other to celebrate the different ways of looking at the same things, which serves to remind us that we are looking up together.”

Debra has explored many printmaking techniques. This month she highlights her linocuts including the use of color in a reduction process, which results in smaller editions. She continues the “whiteline” technique pioneered in Mendocino by her favorite artists, Emmy Lou Packard and Dorr Bothwell.

Come and enjoy the new works of this skillful printmaker. See the moon and other subjects in a new light.
