Steve Chell's contemporary mixed media mirrors

Presented by Edgewater Gallery at Edgewater Gallery

Mirrors, photography on metal featured at Edgewater Gallery

Steve Chell’s contemporary mixed media mirrors that feature strips of textured glass and colorful insets will be shown alongside his new abstract photographic strips on dye-infused aluminum at Fort Bragg’s Edgewater Gallery in November. His month-long show will open on First Friday, November 4, from 5-8 p.m., at the gallery, 356 N. Main St. near the Laurel Street intersection. Light refreshments will be served.

Chell will give a short presentation about his work at 6 p.m.

Best-known in coastal art circles for his mirrors, Chell has merged his two art mediums by presenting his colorful photos on vertical mirror strips. He also incorporate them in his larger mirrors. His photographs include coastal landscapes, but focus primarily on the abstract. “I seek out fascinating shapes, textures, colors, and the play of light and dark,” he says. “They’re everywhere we look, ” he adds, “but, perhaps more accurately, they are where we rarely look.”

This November show marks the start of Edgewater’s 14th year as an artist-owned collective, having opened its doors on Main Street in October, 2003 and currently has more than 15 full-time and guest artists offering a variety of artistic mediums from jewelry, watercolor/oil paintings, ceramics, sculpture, burl wood bowls/tables, photography on metal, and greeting cards to decorative kites and mirrors.

The gallery is open 10 to 5 daily and until 5:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Currently, Edgewater is seeking new artists to fill spots of artists who have moved from the area. Jewelry designers and both 2D and 3D artists are encouraged to apply to become guest or full-time members, and they should contact Alexis Moyer at potshop@saber.net Applications also are available at the gallery.
