THE ART OF COLLECTING: New Additions to the GRACE HUDSON MUSEUM

Presented by Grace Hudson Museum at Grace Hudson Museum

Our first new exhibition of 2022 focuses on works of art, Pomo baskets, and various historical materials that have been added to our collections over the past five or so years. In addition to displaying these items — many for the first time! — The Art of Collecting will explore what and why we collect at the Grace Hudson Museum.

A major feature of the show will be 16 Grace Hudson paintings recently given to us by the Palm Springs Art Museum, as well as an uncommon Hudson painting from Grace’s year in Oklahoma (1903) and Grace’s spectacular The Wi-ly, both purchased at auction through our Endowment’s Acquisitions Fund.

Open Wed-Sat, 10am-4:30pm; Sun, 12-4:30pm.

The Art of Collecting: New Additions to the Grace Hudson Museum focuses on works of art, Pomo baskets, and various historical materials that have been added to the Museum’s collections over the past five or so years. “We believe Hudson, as an artist and a woman, to be a significant figure in the history of art in California and beyond,” said Adam Lerner, the JoAnn McGrath Executive Director/CEO at the Palm Springs institution. “With our gift, we are able to better serve her legacy, while at the same time continuing to appropriately represent her work in our own collection.”

This act of giving was well-met by the act of receiving. “We were surprised and thrilled when Palm Springs first approached us about gifting us the paintings,” said Grace Hudson Museum Director David Burton. “We are enormously grateful to Adam, the staff, and the trustees at Palm Springs Art Museum, and also to the Miner Anderson Family Foundation,” which believed in bringing the works back to the place where they were originally created.

The Art of Collecting has been extended & will be on display through May 8, 2022. An in-person tour will be featured in March, along with virtual programs, including a talk on the ins and outs of art collecting.
