Oil and Water – Lynne Whiting Roberston – July 2021
Well established North Coast plein air painter Lynne Whiting Roberston is featured this July at the Artists’ Co-op of Mendocino where she has been a member for over a decade. “Oil and Water”aptly describes her choice of media, watercolor and oils. Many of her paintings are based on locations around the Mendocino coast and California valleys, though she also travels to Sedona, Yosemite, and Zion for inspiration. Big River is an all time favorite, seen in many seasons, like visiting a familiar friend. Collectors near and far find her work evokes a sense of place, a tranquil reminder of time spent in nature, a story told in colors and light.
This collection highlights some of the same scenes interpreted both in watercolor and in oil. The artist notes that any painting requires attention to composition and values first, often worked out in a thumbnail sketch before the light changes. A watercolor begins with white paper and has to be carefully planned to maintain light areas and is painted working from light to dark. With oils, darkest colors form the structure of the painting and lightest colors come last. Oils are rich in thicker paint and allow for corrections while watercolors tend towards spontaneous color mixes and surprises. Come see for yourself how these two media have been masterfully used by the artist to represent her subjects.
Visit the Artist’ Co-op July 7th to July 31st to view “Oil and Water.” The gallery is open daily from 11-4.
