The Point Arena Light Station #496 was established on September 30, 1869 and the original tower was first lit on May 1, 1870.  2020 represents the 150th anniversary of the Point Arena Lighthouse lighting the way on the coast.  This exhibit is intended to celebrate this significant sesquicentennial of a Mendocino coast icon.  The exhibit is open to all types of visual media, i.e. painting, photography, sculpture, fabric arts, ceramics, mixed media, jewelry, woodworking, etc. It will be an exhibit inspired by the Lighthouse and the coast that it protects and represents.

Artists are encouraged to submit artwork that is inspired by, captures the beauty and grandeur and celebrates the significance of the Point Arena Lighthouse.  How the artist interprets this into their artform will be significant to and enhance the Our Lighthouse exhibit.

This will be a judged exhibit with awards given for first, second and third place for general entries.  Artwork submitted by artists under age 18 will also be judged for first, second and third place awards:

First Place (In Memory of Luciano Zamboni) – $500
Second Place – $300
Third Place – $150
Young Artist First Place – $100
Young Artist Second Place – $50
Young Artist Third Place – $25
Judge’s Awards – Recognition Ribbon
People’s Choice award – Recognition Ribbon

All winners will also receive a Point Arena Lighthouse 150th Anniversary cloisonné pin.  The Point Arena Lighthouse Keepers, Inc. (PALKI), the non-profit that owns, operates and maintains the historic 150 year old Light Station, is grateful to the donors that are making the cash awards possible.  The First Place award was donated In Memory of Luciano Zamboni and the Young Artist awards are being sponsored by the Point Arena Merchants Association (PAMA).  Other awards may be added before the exhibit opens.  Please contact Mark Gross (postmark@gmail.com) if you would like to sponsor the Second or Third Place awards or create your own award.

We are honored to have Judith and Robin Leeper as the judges for this exhibit.  Judith is a former PALKI Board Member who served for 12 years on the Board, including four years as Vice President and eight years as Secretary, and is a member of the Design Committee that created to interior designs of the remodeled Assistant Keeper’s House 4, Head Keeper’s House and Keeper’s Apartment that contribute significantly to PALKI’s revenue.  Robin and Judith are the owners of Red Stella, the downtown Gualala boutique that offers shoppers a unique variety of merchandise that reflects coastal living with an urban edge.

If you are a chef or baker we encourage you to create a Lighthouse themed appetizer or dessert for the opening reception on Friday, April 3 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
