Witty and Touching Teen Drama: "I And You"

Presented by Willits Community Theatre at Willits Community Theatre

Written by the prolific playwright Lauren Gunderson and directed by WCT star Kelly Kesey in her directorial debut, the show focuses entirely on two high school students whose souls are colliding in an amazing and unexpected way. Starring in the show as the teenagers are Aria Silveira as Caroline and Oscar Montelongo Medina as Anthony. In a tribute to youth and love and the mystery of the human potential to bond, Caroline and Anthony discover a unique connectedness through the profound giving of oneself.

One afternoon, Anthony arrives unexpectedly at classmate Caroline’s door bearing a beat-up copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, with an urgent request for her help with a high school English project. Homebound due to illness, Caroline hasn’t been to school in months and is not expecting this intrusion. Her quick witted and cynical nature sharply contrasts with Anthony’s boy-next-door persona, which creates intense, touching and sometimes hysterical moments between them. As these two let down their guards and share their secrets, this seemingly mundane school project unlocks the much deeper mystery that has brought them together.

Director Kesey has starred in previous WCT hit shows, including “Angel of Chattam Square”, “Grace and Glorie” and “Revival as Possum Kingdom”. In her directorial debut, Kesey says she’s taken on a play that she has loved from the minute she read it and she’s particularly excited to be working with the two budding teen talents in Aria Silveira and Oscar Montelongo Medina.

Kesey expects the dialogue exchanges and the relationship that develops between Aria and Oscar on stage will take the audience through amazing twists and turns, and leave people re-evaluating not only the play itself, but the impacts of the choices they have made in their own lives. Kesey says, “This play is a searing drama that pries open the shell of pretense to get at the hurt and the hope that lies within us all.”

She insists, “Good live theater helps us to question our beliefs and most importantly, asks us to hold onto our long-lost childhood dreams. Why not? The chance to regain so much is not to be missed.”
