Ilja Tinfo’s showing includes six canvas paintings he has created from his favorite Old Master paintings and drawings.
I have in the past made copies of some of my favorite Old Master paintings and drawings. The six canvases in this exhibit fall into that category. Four are copies of *Bargue plates and two are copies from small reference photos from the book “The Nude” by Kenneth Clark. These are among my favorite ancient (ca. 500 B.C.) marble sculptures that have been distressed by time, war and vandalism. I love them the way they are.
*Charles Bargue (1826-1883) was a French painter, draftsman and teacher who put together a drawing course that consisted of lithographic plates that were made from drawings of casts made by Bargue from life, for his students to copy and learn from.
