Harry Lyons & Rick McCann, Ecosystem Restoration on Clear Lake

Harry Lyons & Rick McCann, Ecosystem Restoration on Clear Lake

at Ukiah City Council Chambers

Tuesday, January. 15, 7PM
Ukiah City Council Chambers,
300 Seminary Ave. Ukiah, CA

The northern end of Clear Lake adjacent to Rodman Slough and Middle Creek was blocked off with levees, between 1900 and 1940, and the land was “reclaimed” for agricultural use. A project is currently under way to breach the levees, and restore 1,650 acres of lake and wetland. Bloody Island will again be an island. The additional water resulting from the increased lake area will be allocated to municipal districts drawing water from the lake. Yolo’s water allowance under the Solano decree may also be increased.

Harry is a founding member of the Middle Creek Restoration Coalition. This group has sold the benefits of this Flood Damage Reduction/Ecosystem Restoration in a number of ways: as a required engineering effort to prevent damage to infrastructure and related liability; as an expansion of recreational opportunity; as a step in preserving an endangered species; as a sediment trap to reduce nutrient enrichment of Clear Lake; and as an expansion of critical habitat. Harry will describe the science of the working marsh as well as the politics of the effort to make it a reality. Harry has lived in Lake County for forty years. He is an Emeritus Professor of Biology/Ecology at Yuba College, and has a PhD in Oceanography from the Scripps Institution of the University of California. He is an engaging and entertaining speaker with a unique presentation style. This will be an evening you will not want to miss!

The presentation is free to the public, though donations will be welcome. The Ukiah Civic Center is located at 300 Seminary Ave. For more information on a wide variety of topics related to birding in Mendocino County please go to www.peregrineaudubon.org.
