Paul McCandless Trio at Tallman

Paul McCandless Trio at Tallman "Concert with Conversation"

Presented by Tallman Hotel & Blue Wing Restaurant at Tallman Hotel & Blue Wing Restaurant

This is the third in the Tallman Hotel’s 2019 series of intimate “Concerts with Conversation” in Riffe’s Meeting House next to the Hotel.  In a “house concert” setting for a maximum of 40 people, world class musicians let their hair down and play for the fun of it before an appreciative Sunday afternoon audience.  Coffee and cookies are served.  Admission is $25 + tax and tickets may be purchased at the Hotel front desk or by calling (707) 275-2244 ext. 0.

Today’s concert features the incomparable reed instrument player PAUL MCCANDLESS in an exploration of modern jazz themes together with harpist MOTOSHI KOSAKO and bass virtuoso MICHAEL MANRING.

Paul McCandless is a gifted multi-instrumentalist (oboe, bass clarinet, saxophone, woodwinds) and composer whose soaring lyricism and grounding in both classical and jazz disciplines has been integral to the sound of the original Paul Winter Consort as well as the innovative quartet Oregon.  His 1996 Grammy with Bela Fleck & The Flecktones was followed by two nominations in 2001 for a CD featuring Oregon and the Moscow Tchaikovsky Orchestra.

Motoshi Kosako moved from Japan to the U. S. in 1997, soon after he started playing the harp. He was the principal harpist of the Stockton Symphony Orchestra between 2005 and 2010, but hs real love is Jazz improvisation and composition for the harp.  Motoshi plays numerous original compositions and standards as solo or in trio and quartet. Since 2008 he has been touring internationally to give performances and various workshops. Motoshi is now considered one of the most influential jazz harpists in the world.  He has released 2 classical solo albums and 9 jazz albums in the last 10 years.

Michael Manring has developed a new approach to the bass guitar that includes unorthodox tunings and techniques.  He has honed his skills on hundreds of session and solo recordings and thousands of concerts throughout the world.  Michael developed his own unique instrument, the Hyperbass, together with master guitar maker Joe Zon in 1990.  “It has a custom bridge that allows for instant re-tuning of all four strings simultaneously,” he says, “and it’s an absolute joy to play.”
