Praises to Tonantzin

Praises to Tonantzin

Presented by Ukiah Poet Laureate Committee at Grace Hudson Museum

The Virgin of Guadalupe is often known as Tonantzin, meaning the mother goddess, Mother Earth, and a form of address for the Virgin Mary. Her actual feast day is on December 12 and blends the Old and New Worlds, embodying the Catholic Church and the indigenous peoples of Mexico. Celebrants can participate as readers, as listeners, or as both, and are invited to bring offerings of poetry, stories, dreams, or music — their own or the work of others — in English and/or Spanish.
