Karen Bowers is Featured Artist through September at the Artists’ Co-op of Mendocino

“Blue State Variations” features work on paper and canvas that trade on several features of our politically named and cool cultured “blue state.” A variety of blue paints, turquoise, cobalt, blue green, phthalo blue, ultramarine, and more, provide the dominant backdrop to this series.

While a graduate student of American politics and political thought at UC Berkeley, Karen took up painting. She never stopped painting while she went on to teach, manage campaigns, serve as California legislative staff, government relations director for East Bay Regional Park District and environmental /land use analyst in an international law firm.

Karen explains that for her painting is like a political campaign:  develop a theme, organize the palette, design, compose, vet the results, work on it, get feedback, hope for a winning result.

Today, Karen says painting keeps her centered while she works with local activists to help people become citizens, inspire people to vote, support good candidates and help turn red areas of the state blue.

Karen is a member of Mendocino Eco Artists and co-chair of the Coast Democratic Club.  A few times a year, she holds painting workshops at her Navarro Ridge studio.
