Jonathan Palmer & Nicholas Collins: "The Other Way Round"

Presented by Mendocino Art Center at Mendocino Art Center

JONATHAN PALMER
This exhibition of screen-prints was created in order to explore new techniques. My compositional decisions were based mostly on formal curiosities. My goal was to discover new methods and approaches intended to inform a new developing body of art. The content examines relationships between nature and human nature through the complexities that connect and divide our existence to the natural world. Using both formal and figurative imagery I seek to represent the balance, chaos and interaction between two opposing yet related forces.

“Man is the only creature who refuses to be what he is.”

— Albert Camus

Jonathan received his BFA from Syracuse University and his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. He has exhibited his mixed media work, paintings and prints throughout the United States including New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Baton Rouge, and Providence, as well as internationally in Japan. He teaches painting, drawing and printmaking classes at Mendocino College and the San Francisco Art Institute. He currently lives in Northern California with his wife and daughter.

NICHOLAS COLLINS
I was born and raised in Oakland, CA. My parents emigrated from Britain and I spent most of my summers in the UK. I was fortunate enough to attend The Berkeley Children’s Art Studio as a kid which gave me confidence as an artist and respect for the process of artmaking. I studied sculpture at UCSB and printmaking at College of The Redwoods. I trained under master printmakers Kazuko Watanabe and Emmanuel Montoya at KALA Art Institute in Berkeley where I did my residency. My work is in private collections in the US and UK and can be purchased at Noyo Printworks in “downtown” Fort Bragg or through my website. For the past year I have been having a great time teaching linocut with the incredible group of artists at the Art Explorers.
