Clay is a wonderfully adaptive material in its malleability and lack of limitations. Once you understand how to work with it, the possibilities are truly endless. In this four-week handbuilding class taught by studio coordinator Seth Charles, you will learn foundational hand building techniques for working with clay. With these techniques and the guidance of your instructor, you will be equipped to plan and execute nearly any project you can dream up.

The first three weeks of class will be focused on learning three primary building techniques: pinch, coil and slab. From here, the instructor will facilitate students in a larger project of their design over the course of the remaining classes. In addition, Seth will lead exercises that will help students mine their creativity and push the boundaries of conventional ideas of the material. Regardless of whether this is your first time touching clay or if you are an experienced ceramist, this class has something for you.

For an additional fee, the studio will be open for students for one hour after class and “open studio” time on Saturdays, 10am–2pm. Please call the Mendocino Art Center Registrar to reserve: 707.937.5818 x10.
