You can find amazing samples of simple to very complex Notan designs on the web, these will inspire you to take this workshop.
Notan is the underlying value structure of a painting in its simplest form. The theory of Notan is that artists can mine the interaction between light and dark space to create captivating works of art. These designs are a way in which you would arrange the darks, lights in a painting. If you do this design well in your painting, it will have a strong effect. Its origins are in Japanese art and is tied to Zen Buddhism, a school of thought which strives for balance and minimalism, in life as well as aesthetics.
Jazzminh Moore has a BFA and MFA, both in Drawing and Painting. She has exhibited widely and was featured in the New York Magazine, Whitewall, New American Paintings, Huffington Post, ArtVoices and Interview magazine. Jazzminh is currently an adjunct faculty member at Mendocino College, teaching color and composition, figure drawing, portrait painting and fundamentals of drawing. http://www.jazzminhmoore.com
