Award-winning filmmaker and Tribeca Film Festival alumnus Emilio Subía is set to shoot his latest narrative short film “WAVES” in Mendocino, California from May 17 through May 23.

The film is co-produced by Mendocino County native
Asia Gordon and stars Alex MacNicoll (The SocietyHeart of Champions) along with emerging actors. The thriller-drama features several notable locations in the Mendocino area.

The film follows a Latino immigrant as he attempts to integrate into a White American family, only to be met with suspicion when the family’s dog goes missing in the forest. Mendocino County will play a major role in the film, with locations like Montgomery Woods, Irish Beach, and Patterson’s Pub all featured prominently in the film while emphasizing the sentiment of the characters and tension in the plot.

Subía’s first short film, “Ñaños,” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2022 and received accolades including Best International Film Award at Miami Film Festival, Best Film Award at TIDE Film Festival, and a Jury’s Special Mention at FICQuito. “WAVES” promises to be just as captivating, with a storyline that explores the complexity of bias and sentiment of those who feel othered.

Subía is excited to begin filming in the Mendocino area, stating, “Mendocino is the perfect backdrop for this film. Its natural beauty and dream-like beachtown vibe make it the ideal setting to explore the themes in “WAVES.” We’re thrilled to shine a light on the area and grateful for the warm welcome to Mendocino through our partnership with The Arts Council of Mendocino County.”

“WAVES” will be a thought-provoking and visually stunning short film that will encourage global audiences to reflect on their biases as the production team strategizes a global festival run. The film is targeted to premiere in the first quarter of 2024.
