Congratulations go out to Devreaux Baker, recipient of the 2016 Oaxaca Fellowship Award!
About Devreaux’s work, judge Wanda Phipps remarked, “These are poems of great lyrical beauty and emotional power that slip in and out of personas spanning many mind-states, cultures and histories. They bring alive images of back alleys in New Orleans, nightmares of burning crosses in Selma as well as snowy egrets over Vallejo wetlands.”

bakerDevreaux Baker is winner of the 2014 Barbara Mandigo Kelly Peace Poetry Prize from the Nuclear Age Foundation for her poem, In The Year Of The Drone. She is a recipient of the 2012 Hawaii Council on Humanities International Poetry Prize, the Women’s Global Leadership Initiative Poetry Award, and a 2011 PEN Oakland Poetry Award. She has published four books of poetry; Light at the Edge, Beyond the Circumstance of Sight, Red Willow People, and Out of the Bones of Earth. Her poetry fellowships include a MacDowell Fellowship, the Hawthornden Castle International Fellowship, three California Arts Council Awards and two Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Fellowships. Honorable Mentions: Mai Schwartz of Philadelphia, PA and John Johnson of Petaluma, CAAbout Mai Schwartz’s poems, Wanda Phipps remarked, “These poems ask questions like, “Who powers the secret engines of things?” And, “What goes on in the Hadron Collider?” They captivate with exceptional ease, extraordinary music, masterful flow of movement and the delightfully unexpected.”

About John Johnson’s poems, Wanda remarked, “These verses have an engaging speed of thought and image and are full of insightful humor and whimsical details. Fragments of childhood memories commune with the whispers of the dead and magical twists with bits of philosophy.”

Our Honorable Mentions are offered a $200 discount on conference fees should they decide to attend next January’s conference. Thanks go out to everyone who entered. Each year, we received entries whose quality and talent demonstrate such a high level of professional development. Thank you, again.
