Surface Design Play Day & Color Pop Quilt!

Color Pop Quilt (6 hour class)

Pick a color and use free-form/improvisational piecing to create a small quilt top. Then slash through it to add a pop of color.  Learn and use free-piecing techniques for straight line and easy curved seams

Class supplies:

 Fabric:

• At least 10 fat-eights of mostly medium value fabrics of 1 color (blue, red, yellow, etc.)—hand-dyes, tone-on-tones, and very subtle prints work best
• 1/4 yard of a contrasting color for the pop
• Sewing machine in good working order
• Thread to match your main color of fabric
• Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat
• Straight pins
• Seam ripper (just in case)
• Flannel or batting for design board
• Pencil and paper
• Small paper bag for thread and fabric trimmings

Mixed-Media Painting: Surface Design Play  (6 hour class)

Supply fee $15, includes paints and other supplies.

Come and play with an assortment of surface design products including: fabric paints, Inktense Ink Pencils, iridescent Paintstiks, Spectra Bleeding Art Tissue, and more. You get to play, and try things out, with as much or as little instruction as you’d like. Make a project, make a gift, create fabric for something you have in mind, or just experiment. If you have supplies you’ve been wanting to try, bring them along. Wear olds clothes and/or bring an apron.

OPTIONAL: For anyone interested, instructor will have available for purchase Artful Fiber—a kit of fibers including silk rods, cocoons, roving, and fabric; Lutradur; Spunbond; Shapeflex; canvas book and more all packaged in a reusable canvas messenger bag ($20)

Class supplies:

 Fabric:

• Bring 2-3 yards of fabric. White fabric will yield the brightest/cleanest colors, but you can paint on any color or type of fabric, including cheesecloth, sheers, commercial prints, white-on-whites.
• Gloves—short, thin latex –type gloves will give you the best flexibility
• Several plastic plates or small trays to use as palettes
• 1–2 large plastic containers for water – used yogurt or cottage cheese type containers are good
• Spray / misting bottle
• 4–5 plastic spoons for mixing
• Dry cleaner bags or other plastic to place fabric on to dry
• Foam and bristle brushes – bring a variety of types and sizes
• Scissors
• Roll of paper towels
• Plastic for covering workspace

OPTIONAL:

• Plastic square notched spreader used for applying mastic (available at hardware stores)
• Palette knife
• Stencils / stencil brush
• Small squeeze bottle with fine tip
• Rubber stamps (larger designs work better than small intricate ones)
• Grids, such as rubber sink mats, wire mesh, paint bucket grid; plastic lace
• Small things with interesting shapes and/or textures that can be used to place on top of fabric for sunprints (weather and space permitting) or under fabric for painting over
