A full-length dance show exploring the relationship of fire between Yidinji
Nation (Cairns, Australia) and Northern Pomo Dancers (Northern
California, USA). These two dance groups will tell stories of culture,
connection and ceremony from their homelands and are made up of young
people who are supported by their elders and community.
Although an ocean separates the two distinct groups, connections and links
have been identified through a collaborative process over the last two
years creating the foundations of Bayal Kaymanen.
The 45-minute piece premiered in July 2018 as part of Cairns Indigenous
Art Fair. Bringing together performers aged from 7 to 70 years old, Bayal
Kaymanen showcases the power of inter-generational and cross-cultural
engagement as the foundation of creative storytelling. Told under the stars and in the round the show will be performed around a living fire as the centerpiece.
Through a series of cross cultural exchanges and creative developments
that have taken place in Sydney, Pomo homelands in California, and in
Cairns over the past two years, this show intertwines traditional and
contemporary modes of storytelling to bring together a dynamic
performance of two of the world’s oldest living cultures.
Spearheaded by Miriki Artistic Director, Pauline Lampton, Miriki
Performing Arts has worked with key elders and artists from across the
Cairns region, Australia and Pomo leaders to support the young people
through this journey, bringing together a dynamic team of choreographers,
song people, designers, knowledge keepers and arts workers to create a
cultural and artistic experience like no other.
Please join us under the stars for a celebration of generational exchange
and cross-cultural sharing.
Two sections of the show relating directly to fire were created and pieced
together with young local Indigenous people and elders, community
leaders and knowledge keepers from Yidinji nation.
This project was made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional
Arts Fund, an Australian Government program designed to benefit regional and remote arts practitioners, arts workers, audiences and communities.
The fund is provided through Regional Arts Australia and is administered
in Queensland by Flying Arts Alliance. This project has also been assisted
by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its
arts funding and advisory body. This tour is proudly supported by the
Embassy of Australia, Washington DC.
It promises to immerse audiences of all ages in a reinvigorated cultural
experience.
