Dorr Bothwell: “Rock, Paper, Scissors”

The Mendocino Art Center highlights the collage works by Mendocino heritage artist Dorr Bothwell in the showing, “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” November 5 through January 2, in the Nichols Gallery. The works are primarily from the 1980s and 1990s.

Join us for a Second Saturday Gallery Reception, November 13, open until 7pm
While we won’t have wine and snacks due to COVID-19, we will be serving up great art! Free admission.

Prior to the Reception, please join us for a free, hands-on “Art in Action” collaging event, 2pm-4pm, in conjunction with “Rock, Paper, Scissors.”
Participants may create individual collages or collaborate on a community wall collage.

A second “Art in Action” event will be held Saturday, November 27, 2pm-4pm.

Sometimes by chance, more often by courageous intuition, wherever Dorr Bothwell found herself, she was at the creative center of her times, and unselfconsciously moving ahead of them. An inspiring teacher, and author, with Marlys Mayfield, of “Notan: The Dark-Light Principle of Design” (Dover Books), Dorr Bothwell’s artwork is in the collections of major museums in the United States and Europe. In addition to her richly symbolic paintings in oils and acrylics, her watercolors, and woodblock prints, Bothwell pioneered serigraphy as a fine art medium. In later years she worked with collage, and used laserprint collage elements in her acrylic paintings. In Bothwell’s opinion, laserprint, more archivally durable than watercolor or giclees, should be accepted as a fine art reproduction medium, as serigraphy has come to be accepted today.
