A gallery exhibit by Mari Yamaguchi, focusing the historical and modern use of ramie, hemp, linden bark, banana and other bast fibers in Japanese textiles.

Before silk and cotton were introduced to Japan, people used the fibers of the native plants or trees, such a hemp, ramie, banana, kudzu and linden tree.

Even today, this tradition of hand processing the plant bast fiber to make threads/cloths remain thanks to “Kimono Culture.”  This exhibit will focus on plant material rather than refined designing or weaving/dyeing techniques on finished items.

Saturday, June 3, as part of PTArts’ monthly Program Series, Mari Yamaguchi will present a program and workshop on natural bast fibers of Japan. Social hour will be 10-11:00 AM, with the program 11-12:00.  All are welcome, donations appreciated.

Saturday afternoon, June 2, 1-4:00 PM, Mari will host a workshop at PTArts on how to spin Kudzu into thread. Check PTArts’ website, pacifictextilearts.org for more information and to register.
