Fund-Raiser Job Description
Overview
Create financial development opportunities, to increase the contributions of individuals, businesses, and groups to the Willits Community Theatre by building relationships and exploring new fundraising opportunities from various sources
Ability to network is paramount for this job, since success in the role depends heavily on being able to forge positive relationships with supporters.
Work to raise awareness of the WCT’S work, aims and goals.
Fund-raiser reports directly to board treasurer, but also works with, and is supported by, office staff.
Typical work activities
  • motivating and facilitating supporters to maximize the funds they contribute;
  • designing promotional materials and increasing awareness of WCT’s work, goals, and financial needs.
  • inspiring new supporters to donate, while maintaining and developing relationships with existing supporters;
  • organizing traditional activities, such as sponsored outdoor events
  • developing new and imaginative fundraising activities, many of which involve organizing events;
  • raising awareness of WCT and its work at local and regional levels, e.g. by giving talks to groups or seeking photo opportunities with the media;
  • developing and coordinating web-based fundraising, online donations;
  • increasing funds by researching and targeting charitable trusts whose criteria match the WCT’s aims and activities;
  • developing and implementing a strategy for individual and corporate supporter recruitment and development;
  • overseeing corporate fundraising, including employee giving and matched giving from employers;
  • writing applications and mail-shots, using direct mailing to reach a wide range of potential and current donors;
Important Qualities
Communication skills. Fundraisers need impeccable communication skills in order to communicate the message of their organization so that people will make donations.
Detail oriented. Fundraisers must be detail oriented because they deal with large volumes of data, including lists of people’s names and phone numbers, and must comply with state and federal regulations. Failing to do so may result in penalties.
Leadership. Many fundraisers manage teams of volunteers and must be able to lead them without having the incentive of pay at their disposal.
Organizational skills. Fundraisers manage large campaigns and events that require planning and organizational skills to succeed.
