Explore the creative possibilities of clay without using a potter’s wheel. Beginners will learn pinch, slab, and coil techniques to create various projects including hand built mugs, vases, serving trays, and more. Brief discussions at the beginning of class will touch on contemporary ceramics and the skills we will be building to make our own work. Students will learn how to embellish their pieces using slips (liquid colored clay) and glazes. All finished work will be food safe and fully functional.
Intermediate students can refine their skills while exploring new forms using molds and templates. Emphasis will be on student’s goals in expanding their hand building skills. We will explore various techniques for creating surface designs and textures on clay and methods for joining and attaching pieces to build more varied and unique pottery. Decorating and glazing techniques will also be explored.
