Cultural Competency Course

The next Cultural Competency Course starts Oct 4th and will meet every other Monday evening through Dec 13th at 6-8 pm for a total of 6 sessions.

This time around, the holidays of Indigenous People's Day (formerly known as Columbus Day) and Thanksgiving fall within the bounds of our time together in the course. We will be incorporating Truth in History discussions to prepare folks to engage in deeper understanding and navigate conversations around the significance of these holidays in the context of decolonization.

Other topics we will cover are understanding the systems of power within Colonialism - especially in regard to Indigenous People of California as well as its Land, Waters, and Ecosystems, developing Anti-Racist vocabulary, examining the ways that White Fragility manifests, learning the importance of trauma tending, investigating our local Indigenous histories, writing a Land Acknowledgement, researching Indigenous Environmental and Land Back Movements, and creating actionable goals for building relationships with Indigenous People around land restoration efforts.

There will be 3 tiers of sliding scale pricing to make the class accessible to all.

Kanyon Coyote Woman

Kanyon Sayers-Roods is Costanoan Ohlone-Mutsun and Chumash; she also goes by her given Native name, “Coyote Woman”. She is proud of her heritage and her native name (though it comes with its own back story), and is very active in the Native Community. She is an Artist, Poet, Published Author, Activist, Student, and Teacher. The daughter of Ann-Marie Sayers, she was raised in Indian Canyon, the trust land of her family, which currently is one of the few spaces in Central California available for the Indigenous community for ceremony. Kanyon’s art has been featured at the De Young Museum, The Somarts Gallery, Gathering Tribes, Snag Magazine, and numerous Powwows and Indigenous Gatherings. She is a recent graduate of the Art Institute of California, Sunnyvale, obtaining her Associate and Bachelor of Science degrees in Web Design and Interactive Media. She is motivated to learn, teach, start conversations around decolonization and reinidgenization, permaculture, and to continue doing what she loves, Art.

Anna Hope

Anna Hope FarPorte has Celtic ancestry that inspires her appreciation of seasonal cycles. She looks to guidance from Indigenous Wisdom Keepers on how to restore the ecosystem in which she lives in Northern California. Anna Hope has lived in giant redwood trees, planted fruit trees with children at their schools all over California, converted diesel buses to run on vegetable oil, made herbal medicine, built natural homes, taught workshops, and organized community events. She is versed in both permaculture principles and diversity awareness. She observes nature at her homestead where she raises her biracial daughter and grows medicinal herbs. She has previously co-taught classes on Understanding Systems of Oppression and Anti-Racism in Herbalism.
