IMG_2594I learned about sketching and scribbles. In first grade, we did skulls, and in second grade we drew fruit in a bowl.
—3rd grader, Yokayo School, Marie Pera’s art class

I like learning drawing that I didn’t know before, because my dad’s an artist, but he doesn’t usually do it with me. I like to draw people very much.
—3rd grader, Yokayo School, Marie Pera’s art class

Art is fun. Usually when I’m at my house and I have nothing to do, I do art. I like it because it gives me stuff to do, and it’s fun.
—3rd grader, Yokayo School, Marie Pera’s art class

I like art, being creative. It’s fun.
—3rd grader, Yokayo School, Marie Pera’s art class

I love art because it’s peaceful. Art is just peaceful. I do almost about anything.
—4th grader, Nokomis School, Karen Wallaert’s mural-painting project

This is my first time doing a mural. It feels great, because people are going to be able to see the art we made.
—Nokomis School 4th grader, Karen Wallaert’s mural-painting project

I like art because it’s people, and you can see all the different kinds of colors that are there that you haven’t seen before. And nobody’s talking, and you get to have fun. If people are talking you won’t be able to concentrate, and then you’ll be all messed up.
—Nokomis School 4th grader, Karen Wallaert’s mural-painting project

IMG2596I also like doing this (mural project) with my friends, because they help and you need help because this is a big job, and you can’t do it all alone.
—Nokomis School 4th grader, Karen Wallaert’s mural-painting project

I used to do art when I was in preschool, but I didn’t know much about art and didn’t know what to do. All I did was have a paintbrush and do that. But I’m becoming an artist now. My dad says so. I do it by my own heart.
—Nokomis School 4th grader, Karen Wallaert’s mural-painting project

I like painting. You can learn stuff about painting, and how to draw. I like drawing. You’re studying that person you’re painting.… I really like Mrs. Wallaert. She is the best art teacher I ever had.
—Nokomis School 4th grader, Karen Wallaert’s mural-painting project

Painting! I love painting because—it’s painting!
—Nokomis School 4th grader, Karen Wallaert’s mural-painting project

I like art. I love art! I want to be an artist when I grow up. I like murals best.

Arena Union Elementary School, Grades 6-7:

“(I was most proud of) the poem because it said what was in my head.”
“(I was most proud of) my mini-print because I was surprised with how good it came out.”
“(I was most proud of) my cover because my panda looks peaceful.”

Thank you, Ms. Micheaels! You inspired me to start liking poetry.

Ode to a Powerful Predator
by Kalina Fisher, Arena Union Elementary School, Grade 1

Oh, dark, striped tiger,
you are the color of the sunset
that turns orange.
you are like a shadow
that hunts along;
native of India,
you show us how to be brave.

Ode to a Fat-Cheeked Chipmunk
by David Jacob French, Arena Union Elementary School, Grade 1

Oh, fast, fat-cheeked chipmunk,
you are the color of sunburn
that makes our cheeks hot;
you are like a cupboard
that gathers nuts;
native of North America,
you show us how to climb up trees.

For the Prince of Pink (the Flamingo)
by Emily Grossman, Arena Union Elementary School, Grade 6

For the lanky, leisurely
lover of shallow waters,
who is the color of the beiges and scarlets of sunrise
who lives on the edges of clear waters
who moves gracefully and slowly,
who sometimes is as pink as sugary bubblegum,
who loves to stand still in hidden lakes
and shows us grace and calmness.

IMGP3347To whom it may concern, I liked art because it helped me express my feelings. I would like to have more art because it helped me draw better.

-6th grader

To whom it may concern, The thing I liked most about art was we got to do something fun at school. I would like to have more art at school because it is fun. Art made school a better place for me. -6th grader

To whom it may concern, I would like to say that art class was fun and it help[ed] me get my feelings out that I was going through that day.

I like art a lot, but what I like most was that we could put on our art what kind of person we are and how that made us feel. I thought that it was good to let some of the students find themselves, because in Junior High you kind-of lose yourself.

So I would like to thank Chelsea Taylor for what she brought into our class. It helped so many students. Love, -8th grader

To whom it may concern, I am writing a letter to ask to have more art for a longer time. I have found my inner art person working with my art teacher Chelsea Taylor. She’s a really nice person who knows her art. I have a lot of people in my family who are magnificent artists. I never really liked art until five weeks ago. Chelsea had taught me about music and the art that comes with it, graffiti art, and how it makes people feel, and self-portraits. Being in the eighth grade is really tough for me because I have a lot of work responsibilities and being a role-model for younger kids. Having an art class in this school has been really fun. With Chelsea it’s so easy, fun, and understanding. If you can please let her teach art with the Eel River Charter School 6th – 8th grade class! Thank you, -8th grader

IMGP3369To whom it may concern, I like art because it has a lot of learning and it is good for you and it has a lot of practice and it is fun and I want to sculpt clay and I want the art lady to keep coming back. -6th grader

To whom it may concern, I like that she inspired me to draw and show off my work. I would love to have more art in this class, because it brought out the nice in people. It inspired me to show my work to people. -7th grader

Dear art teacher program people, Send more art. It was so fun and cool. Pay more people to come back. Bring more art stuff. – 7th grader
