An Afternoon of Healing, Hope, Serenades & Serene Sustenance

at Saturday Afternoon Club

On Sunday, November 5th from 1-4 pm, USAC (Ukiah Saturday Afternoon Club) and friends are hosting a community afternoon of love and resiliency, through the gifts of music, spiritual blessings and shared words. The afternoon will be about renewing our connection to our life, our lands, and the strengths of our valleys and hills, our peoples.

Free Community Gratitude Celebration. Saturday Afternoon Clubhouse, 107 S. Oak Street, Ukiah. Contact: kagegaston@gmail.com.

The Ukiah Saturday Afternoon Club is hosting an afternoon of renewing gratitude and resiliency, in honor of our responders, survivors, friends and neighbors. Featuring the band Weird Year, Woman’s Inland Chorus, Paula Samonte and Students, Senegal Drummers, Tara Sufiana, The Raging Grannies, among others. Spoken words and blessings by Bill Churchill, Michael Riedell, Linda Noel, and Roberta Werdinger. Performers invite you to join in dancing, drumming, poetry, tai chi, and gratitude blessings and insights. All ages welcome, with children invited to create a Gratitude Quilt. There will be a 30 minute open mic session for those who want to share with community.

THE STORY BEHIND THIS:

Two months ago USAC rented the clubhouse building for 5th of November for a women’s legacy event. A week after the fire our partners suggested we postpone the women’s event until the Spring. Our nonprofit club members felt they wanted to open the rented space for a community celebration of gratitude, free to the public, a spontaneous opportunity for all levels and ages to participate in raising their voices, their thoughts and sharing.
In the studies conducted on gratitude over the years, we have found that in the worst of situations, the ability to gain or regain the emotion of gratitude is what builds hope, and thus resiliency. Victor Frankle shared this, and more recently Robert Emmons, in his book Gratitude Works, relates what his ten year study showed: in the face of brokenness, gratitude has the power to heal. Taking an afternoon to share this spirit with others seems important today. It has been a rough year all around for many people, our county and the country, even the world. The Redwood Complex Fires slammed into us at a weak point, yet people rallied to help the with physical realities that resulted. On a door in the Redwood Grange a large paper is posted which reads: “What’s helping you right now? What gives you strength, peace or joy? Describe a person, place, animal or spiritual belief that sustains or nurtures you?” This is the basis of building personal and community resiliency, which is the core of what our afternoon of Celebrating Gratitude aims at helping to achieve.

All ages are invited to participate and to perform. We’re grateful at people coming and performing and want to thank everyone listed below in our event announcement, from Weird Year to the Raging Grannies.

As we have the building for the entire day, The Ragging Grannies will be holding a later event for adults at 6 pm, with Roy Zimmerman.

We invite you to join us in this effort, as we reach out to discover others who are working to return our community to wholeness, to place our feet on this ground and our hearts and minds in good spaces. We can never show too much over and support to our friends and neighbors!

If you can share please let me know. We would like to bring the circle together and make sure everyone is included.
