Anne Feeney, Labor Singer

Presented by Community Center of Mendocino at Community Center of Mendocino

Sun, July 2 @ 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm $20

Anne Feeney is the granddaughter of an intrepid mineworkers’ organizer who used music to carry the message of solidarity to working people. After two decades of community activism and regional performances at rallies, Anne took her message on the road. Since 1991 Anne has traveled to the frontlines in 40 states, Canada, Mexico, Ireland and Sweden. Her anthem “Have You Been to Jail for Justice?” has been performed by Peter, Paul and Mary. Dubbed the “minister of culture” to the movements for economic and social justice and human rights, Anne is “the best labor singer in North America” according to late, great Utah Phillips.

There are few working musicians who have worn the title of rabble-rouser more convincingly and energetically than Anne Feeney. The folk singer-songwriter from Pittsburgh spent decades touring the country (42 states in all) and the world singing songs of social and political justice at union rallies, protests and in clubs. Since 2010, shes been battling lung cancer, which is in remission.

Along the way, shes shared stages with Pete Seeger, Billy Bragg and Loretta Lynn, and made many friends and admirers, some of whom have assembled for the new benefit tribute album War on the Workers. Curated by her daughter, Amy Sue Berlin, it features Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary), Holly Near, Dan Bern, Anti-Flag, Emmas Revolution and more doing political/protest songs.
