The Secret Life of Spantsa

The Secret Life of Spantsa

Presented by Mendocino Theatre Company at Mendocino Theatre Company

The Secret Life of Spantsa  is an original one-woman play — created and performed by Zuzka Sabata — based on the life of Olive Oatman, the first tattooed white woman in America. She was a European-American migrant who, in 1852, at the age of 15, found herself adopted by the Mojave Tribe. This highly physical performance delves into the seamy side of American expansionary history by moving beyond the standard narrative of so-called captivity stories into the inner world of a woman caught between cultures and permanently marked by murder.
