Exhibit of Japanese bast fibers, their plant origins, processing into yarn, and textiles created with these traditional fibers, from the research and collections of local artist, Mari Yamaguchi.
Pacific Textile Arts (450 Alger St., Ft. Bragg) will present an exhibit of Japanese bast fibers and textiles from the collection of Mari Yamaguchi, March 2 – 31, opening First Friday, 5-8:00 pm.
Mari was born and raised in Japan, but it was after moving to Ft. Bragg, and connecting with local fiber artists, that she became fascinated with her native country’s bast fiber heritage. She has since studied, researched and experienced the growing and processing of fiber plants like hemp, ramie, and banana, mainly in Okinawa. Her exhibit will be a sharing of these natural fibers and examples of their beauty in weaving. As she put it, “those are the gifts given by the nature.”
