Every day for the last 36 years at The Krenov School, a new set of 23 students embark on the process of woodworking. Learning and honing their craft, each student is tasked with developing a new set of skills and an eye for detail. In the school’s shop, the process starts with students building their own tools: two planes. Every step of this exercise brings the student closer to the school’s founder and master cabinetmaker James Krenov’s vision and methodology in craftsmanship; creating a beautiful tool in which to make beautiful furniture. It is a practice in chasing perfection; a plane needs to be well made and kept sharp to be useful. With a reverence for hand tools, a love for taking a board of wood and transforming it, and an eagerness to learn, each student this year has relished the process of woodworking. This exhibition will highlight that excitement and growth.

The Krenov School was named the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program until July 2017. It is a world-renowned program and has an esteemed cohort of instructors: Laura Mays, Jim Budlong, Greg Smith, Ejler Hjorth-Westh, and shop manager Todd Sorensen. The faculty are all graduates of the program and continue the tradition of the Krenov method and philosophy. Each instructor brings with them years of experience, expertise, and passion to the program. As the program is highly immersive, with students attending six days a week for nine months, a high caliber of work is produced. Each student is given the opportunity to be thoughtful and deliberate with their process in creating their work.
