This is a focused class investigating the various aspects of observational and interpretive drawing.  Participants will be introduced to a broad variety of techniques and approaches to the medium of drawing and will be expected to develop a project to be presented at the end of the class sessions.  Individual and group discussions will be part of each session.

Primary focus will be on line, texture, value, composition, space, repetition, pattern, rhythm, etc.—all developmental considerations for drawing.

The class is geared for both beginning and experienced artists with the intention of stimulating the imagination and broadening one’s drawing skills.

Most materials and supplies will be provided by the instructor –good quality drawing paper, pencils, charcoal, ink, reed pens, brushes, as well as other tools and materials for a $25 lab fee paid to the instructor.  If, however, you have specific tools or materials that you wish to use, you are welcome to bring those as well.

Larry Thomas taught drawing and printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute for many years.  He now lives and works in Fort Bragg, California and periodically teaches drawing workshops at Pacific Textile Arts; at Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, Otis, Oregon; Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Deer Isle, Maine; and at the San Francisco Art Institute.
