Art WORKSHOP offered – HUICHOL ART, CULTURE AND YARN PAINTING
The Huichol Indians of Mexico are an ancient 30,000 year old tribe. Their art, visions and ceremonies are interrelated. Participants will learn about their cosmology, view their art objects and yarn paintings. Larain Matheson has produced a documentary about the Huicholes and shamans and will show this. Each participant will make a small yarn painting of a symbol(s) that is relevant to them. This is a hands-on workshop using yarn to draw and color shapes. No advanced art experience is necessary.
Larain is an artist living in Gualala and teaches workshops, lectures on the Huichol culture throughout the US. Her documentary was at the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of the Native American. Her film has won many awards and she has curated Huichol Artists's shows in
California.
On May 17, there will be a workshop in Gualala, and on June 14 in Willits. Workshop from 10 am - 4 pm. Cost is $65 and includes materials.
Please contact Larain Matheson at (707) 884-9025 or larainapple@mac.com for details and to register.

Telling the Truth in a Small Town
A collaborative effort between Ukiah Players Theatre and Mendocino College, the program will be offered through the Community-Based Ensemble class at Mendocino College (Theatre 105) and will be held Thursday evenings beginning May 15, from 6 - 9:30; a workshop production created by the class, and directed by Magruder, will be performed at the Ukiah Playhouse on Friday and Saturday nights, July 25 and 26.
This year's Telling the Truth in a Small Town has a subtitle: A Day in the Life of Ukiah. The goal of the class is to create a production that weaves a variety of perspectives about life in Ukiah, drawn from experiences of class participants, as well as local oral histories and contemporary interviews. Archival and current photographs will be layered into the mix, as well as original songs.
Magruder is looking for people of all backgrounds and ages to join the project. No theatre experience is necessary, only a willingness to share your story and a deep curiosity and regard for the stories of those who have lived here before us, and those who live here now.
The 3-unit class will be listed in the Mendocino College Summer catalogue in the Theatre section. Due to scheduling issues, the first two classes (May 15 May 22) will be held from 7 - 10 pm in the room adjacent to the College Little Theatre in the Lowery Library building.

Promotional Opportunity for Artists
Take Part in a collaborative, all-state multi-media project
Approximately once a year the California Arts Council uses in-house talent and sweat to create a public-value driven PSA on the arts. This year we're proposing a collaborative project, and we need your help.
The "stars" of this PSA will be objects that demonstrate or represent the arts in California or by Californians -- and each can be no larger than what can fit in a shoe-box. Examples might be ballet shoes from a particular dance company, paintings done by a child through an after-school program, photos of a major artistic icon (like the the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco), cover of a book by a Californian ... the list is endless. These objects would then be used to create an artistic mosaic demonstrating the arts and imagination of California in the video PSA that would be shown on cable stations, the internet and other multi-media sites.
While the staff at the California Arts Council can gather up items on its own, we'd rather have each item represent an artist, arts organization, arts educational facility/class, or art lover.
We're planning to create a supporting website that highlights all those who contribute to the project, demonstrating the talent and diversity of California's arts, with plenty of links, biography or organization information, and multi-site future projects.
Please send in your objects right away to:

re: California Imagination PSA 2008
Please feel free to contact Mary Beth B at 916-322-6588 or mbarber@caartscouncil.com with questions. We're on a tight deadline, so please email or call immediately if you'd like to be part of this endeavor. Call even if you can't think of an object -- we'll brainstorm.
