College of the Redwoods Fine Furniture Program Graduation Show

Since its founding in 1981 by James Krenov, the world-renowned fine woodworking program has attracted, inspired and taught hundreds of students.  The unusual elegance of the museum quality work emerging from the school is reflected in a few clear and thoughtful beliefs: quality work is the result of sensitive use of tools and materials; methods of construction should be understood systematically; technique is subject to constant refinement; work should yield satisfaction and provide a vehicle for personal expression; and the object should reveal attention to detail and be a joy to experience.

An integral part of the Mendocino Village for over 30 years, Highlight Gallery is recognized as one of the premiere fine furniture galleries in the country.  Highlight’s origins go back to 1977 when local fine woodworkers needed a venue for their works of art. At the time, furniture’s place in the 20^th century decorative arts movement was gaining new momentum.  Highlight Gallery was the first gallery on the west coast to showcase furniture and wood turnings as art.  A few years later, the College of the Redwoods established its woodworking program in Fort Bragg, and Highlight Gallery became an ongoing exhibition arena for the original, handcrafted furniture art created at the college.

The show will run from Saturday May 6, until Wednesday, May 31, 2017. Four students will give presentations on the hour from 1pm to 4 pm, Saturday afternoon, May 6.
