The Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference is a vibrant gathering that offers morning workshops in a wide range of genres, relevant to differing experience levels—from a dedicated emerging writers’ workshop to a juried-in master class. Afternoons are packed with craft seminars, pitch panels, one-on-one consultations, and open mics; and every evening offers an opportunity to enjoy the camaraderie and connection that make this conference, in the words of a 2016 participant, “life changing.” An add-on or stand-alone publishing bootcamp is offered the day after the conference for all those interested in learning more about the business-end of writing.

MCWC 2017 attendance is capped at 14 participants per workshop, 12 in the Master Class, and seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration closes as soon as all workshops are full, or a week before the Conference (July 27th), whichever comes sooner.

Visit mcwc.org for more information.

If you have any questions about MCWC 2017, our registrar, Barbara Lee, would be more than happy to help. Call her at 707-485-4031 or email her at info@mcwc.org

Want to hone your writing craft in stimulating and supportive company amidst beautiful surroundings? Registration is now open for the 2017 Mendocino Coast Writers' Conference (MCWC), a vibrant, interactive gathering of award-winning authors and aspiring writers, held from August 3rd to August 5th, at the Mendocino Middle School in Mendocino, California.

Now in its 28th year, MCWC is a three-day immersive literary community. Programming is offered in a wide range of genres, with workshops relevant to many experience levels, from emerging writers to a juried-in Master Class. Afternoons are packed with craft seminars covering Dialogue, Voice, Screenwriting, Flash Fiction, and more.

This year, the MCWC faculty includes:
Jody Gehrman, Master Class Shara McCallum, Poetry Kat Meads, Short Fiction Lisa Locascio, Emerging Writers: John W. Evans, Memoir Michael Lukas, Novel Lewis Buzbee, Middle Grade and Young Adult

Agents April Eberhardt, Elizabeth Kracht, and Jessica Sinsheimer will be presiding over afternoon pitch panels as well as giving one-on-one consults. Saturday evening, August 5th, our keynote speaker will be Michael Krasny: author, scholar, professor of literature, award- winning journalist, and the host of KQED/NPR's “Forum with Michael Krasny.” Editor Hilary Lawson and book marketer Ann Edwards from HarperOne will close out MCWC 2017 with a one-day, stand-alone or add-on Publishing Bootcamp on Sunday, August 6th.
“I just want people to recognize what a gem this conference is,” says Jody Gehrman, former faculty and this year’s Master Class instructor. “It’s small and focused, but at the same time, it’s not claustrophobic. There’s such a wide range of types of writers. It’s one of the least pretentious, friendliest, and most inspiring conferences I’ve had the pleasure to work with.”

The registration fee for the three-day conference, which includes most meals, is $575 before June 30 and $625 thereafter. Participation in the post-conference Publishing Bootcamp is $150. MCWC is proud to offer more than twenty scholarships to reward merit and encourage diversity in our conference community.

“I see our participant pool changing,” says Executive Director, Shirin Bridges. “With the introduction of new diversity scholarships and merit scholarships in every core genre, we hope to nurture a broader range of voices, and we hope to see the caliber of our participants get even better. But we are mindful of not leaving our ‘supportive’ values behind. We have a dedicated emerging writers' workshop to make sure that beginners feel welcome and have relevant programming. And we are famous for the down-home friendliness of our evening events. This is the only conference I know of where the board cooks for you. When you have a board that rolls up its sleeves to stage a conference in that spirit, that spirit permeates.”

At our closing dinner this year, we will be proud to bring our participants the wit and wisdom of Michael Krasny—author, literature professor, award-winning anchor of NPR’s Forum, and now MCWC 2017 keynote speaker. We hope you’ll join us for this, our 28th year!

Since 1993 Michael Krasny has been the host of “Forum with Michael Krasny,” a news and public affairs interview program produced at KQED Radio, the NPR affiliate in San Francisco. In that capacity, he has discussed books and writing with some of the leading authors of our time.
